Video How To – Stylish dressing for the in-between season
Not quite winter and not quite spring–As the weather continues to fluctuate, check out a few tips for staying stylish while mixing and matching pieces from different seasons.
Wearing: Doo.Ri dress and Zara color blocked sandals
Still can’t figure out what to wear this New Year’s Eve? Here’s a gorgeous idea!
It’s always great to look to the past for style ideas but fashion is also mostly about looking forward. As the holiday season comes to an end, the ultimate celebration of the year’s end is a New Year’s Eve party and with every party comes the question - what am I going to wear? Many of you have already figured this out but for the last-minute shoppers, here’s a super chic look that will make you stand out from the crowd. I recently wore this look to a holiday event and it was a big hit. Incredibly light and comfortable, I felt like I was floating most of the night. Here’s a breakdown of the outfit: (more…)
Steal this look – Going casual with the polka dot trend
Kelly H asks: I’ve seen a lot of polka dots on the runways and in magazines. What’s a chic way to wear this trend in real life without being too over the top?
W: I recently wrote about polka dot tights for fall and the polka dot trend in magazines and on the runway. The tights are a great way to try out this trend without investing too much. They’re fun, light and whimsical and you can pair them with anything from dresses to skirts and trenches. Since dots come in different sizes, I would suggest going with smaller dots to start out. The dress below is a $15 find at Walmart (My theory is that you never know where you’ll find a hidden gem). I love the one shoulder look because it allows you to show off just the right amount of skin and the layers and frills of the dress add to the fun and flirty feel that come with the polka dot print. I added a pop of color with a yellow bag and kept my shoes neutral so as not to take away from the print. Hope this helps!
What do you think of the look above? Are you into the polka dot trend?
Stylist’s Corner: Steal this look (Watercolor print dresses)
Summer is the time to experiment with a melange of beautiful colors and this summer all the gorgeous colors we love are coming together to form an irresistible watercolor print. The boldness of this print takes inspiration from the 70s era which dominated the catwalks for spring and summer.
The watercolor print is easy to dress up or down. You can take it to the beach, lunch or dinner. It’s bold yet practical and works with a variety of skin tones. It will also carry effortlessly into fall which means you’ll be getting a lot of use from it. Check out the Stars already in love with this print.
Below is a picture of me wearing one of my favorite watercolor print dresses pre-spring. For summer, I pair it with bold-hued strappy sandals (both high-heeled and flat) or dark cognac colored wedges. You can also throw on a boyfriend blazer to tone the colors down. This addition works whether you’re dressing up or going casual. What are your thoughts on the watercolor print? Would you wear it?
Rue de Chic Style Tip: Irresistibly Chic Blazers for Spring
In a sea of gorgeous colors, prints and chic trends, it’s so difficult to pick one must-have item for spring. After sifting through an array of to-die-for and can’t-live-without-you pieces, we’ve concluded that the spring blazer takes the top spot. An incredibly versatile piece that creates a totally effortless look, transitions perfectly from day to night and can be worn with a pair of shorts, skirt, jeans, dress, strappy heels, oxfords, ballet flats ….need we say more? What’s your must-have item for spring? Share your thoughts below!
Stylist’s Corner – Q of the day: How do you rock a velvet blazer?
Leah H. asks: I recently purchased a thrifted black velvet 3/4 sleeve blazer and wanted to know if you could offer some suggestions on how to rock it? Thanks in advance!
Wemi: Leah, There are definitely quite a few chic ways to rock your velvet blazer.
1. Because of the rich texture of the material, you can go the casual chic route and pair it with some skinny jeans and a silk camisole under the blazer (the silk will complement the velvet perfectly)…you can finish off your look with some booties or pumps.
2. Once again working off the richness of the blazer, you can pair it with a dress. For the winter months, deep but shocking colors like cobalt blue, plum or deep turquoise will do wonders for you.
3. Lastly, if you’re interested in a super polished or sophisticated look, pair the blazer with some black wide leg trousers. The all black look will be slimming but the velvet texture will give some variation. The wide leg trousers also give the illusion an elongated look, which is always a plus. The blouse under this should be simple…keep it clean and let your accessories give you that extra “something” instead. Check out Ellen Pompeo’s look below for some visual assistance! Hope this helps!
Stylist’s Corner – current travel obsession
For a lot of people, traveling is most of the time a big hassle. Getting to the airport early, loading your luggage, going through security (which includes taking of your jacket, shoes, etc). I’m probably one of the few people left who still thinks of traveling as a chic event. I recently picked up “Airline: Identity, Design and Culture” by Keith Lovegrove and loved the effort that was put into dressing up to travel in the past. Yes, I am one of those people determined to make the airport halls my own personal runway. I think it’s fun to make an effort.
I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny. And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.
-Coco Chanel
Which brings me to my most current travel obsession. I like to look smart when I travel, compact and put together. The unisex leather travel bag below is a perfect weekend bag and carry on luggage. The leather is oh so soft but strong enough to hold your dearest…simply put, the perfect travel accessory.
