Trend spotting – All hail the Greek goddess

Emma Stone attends the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in a green Grecian goddess gown with gold accessories by Lanvin
Before the “goddess” title became synonymous with Charlie Sheen’s summer antics, it actually was associated with beauty, grace and elegance. In terms of fashion, there’s a reason why the goddess style dress has endured for so many seasons. Evoking the very essence of a woman’s beauty and femininity, it doesn’t overwhelm but in fact enhances. Draped to perfection on the wearer, its simple but elegant cut is what makes it stand out. As awards season approaches, this trend will no doubt be prominent on the red carpet and stars like Jessica Biel, Freida Pinto, Emma Stone and many others have already gotten a head start on the trend. What do you think of the goddess style dress. Are you a fan? Share your thoughts below…

Jessica Biel wears Giambattista Valli's modern take on the goddess dress featuring a keyhole bust and oversized layered puff sleeves. The look is completed with a traditional gilded leaf belt.

Master the trends for Fall – A breakdown of Fall 2011′s must-have looks + tips to make them your own
As Fashion Week gets underway in NYC and the gorgeous and colorful Spring 2011 looks saunter down the runways, it’s easy to forget that fall is here and now and spring is more than a few months away. Not to worry though, based on the looks featured on the earlier fall runways, the upcoming months need not be dreary nor do you need to give up even an ounce of color. With the runways featuring rich colors like cobalt blue, marigold, burnt orange and shocking red; texture that ranged from lace to leather and prints galore, the upcoming season is gearing up to be anything but boring when it comes to fashion.
Here’s a peek at trends to look forward to this coming fall season…
Color: The runways were rich with color for fall, two colors in particular made their mark – Cobalt Blue and Emerald Green. Everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Ralph Lauren and 3.1 Phillip Lim showed their love for these colors. Other interesting colors to look out for fall are Marigold and burnt Orange. Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Victoria Beckham all featured these gorgeous colors.
Style Tip: Color is the best and easiest way to stand out with your fall wardrobe. Go for structured jackets in shocking colors to incorporate this runway trend into your wardrobe. Try a cobalt blue swing jacket or an emerald green trench coat. You’ll keep warm and stay stylish, all with a pop of color.
Lace: Looks like lace is here to stay. Both Carolina Herrera and Monique Lhuillier showed very feminine and elegant looks incorporating lace and lace print. Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu also featured this trend.
Style Tip: The key to keeping the elegance of this trend is to find something that doesn’t show too much skin or combines the use of other materials like black silk or leather.
Leather: The leather movement is going strong and from what we saw during New York Fashion Week, it has no intention of slowing down. From 3.1 Phillip Lim to Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, leather made a huge splash. It came in pants, shift dresses, pastel colors, rich dark colors and it was fabulous.
Style Tip: This is such an easy trend to incorporate into your wardrobe. You can pair some leather leggings with an oversized sweater and pumps, go for a rocker chic look with a motorcycle jacket which can be worn with skinny jeans, leggings or a dress to add a feminine touch.
Print: If color played a starring role in the collections, print played a co-starring role. Oscar de la Renta’s runway was rich with exotic prints which is an extension of what we saw in the spring and summer months. Marc Jacobs made us fall in love with polka dots, big and small, Proenza Schouler incorporated his mélange of prints into everything from structured jackets to pants, skirts and shift dresses and Monique Lhuillier made animal print incredibly elegant.
Style Tip: Always balance out your prints with an item in a solid color. Pair a tribal print shift dress with a structured black blazer or print pants with a simple pastel colored silk top.
The “new” Pants: The runways featured sleek, elegant trousers for fall so just because summer is over doesn’t mean you should pack up those 70s inspired pants. Sticking to the theme of elegant simplicity, the “it” pants of the season are definitely the ankle pants. Everyone from Calvin Klein to 3.1 Phillip Lim and Jason Wu showed us the perfect city chic look with these pants.
Style Tip: These pants are equally chic with a pair of oxfords or sky high pumps.
Fall Trend Alert – Going wild for animal print
After seeing a refreshing take on animal print on the Fall 2011 runways earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before it started making it’s way to the red carpet and Hollywood events.
Not everyone’s a fan of animal print and that’s understandable. There is after all a very thin line between stylish and tacky when it comes to this print.
Style Tip: Test out this trend with some elegant leopard print peep-toe pumps.
Here are some chic animal print looks to give you some inspiration for fall.

Jessica Alba didn't let pregnancy stop her from being fashionable. She took a risk that paid off in a leopard print Dolce and Gabbana Maxi

The print doesn't discriminate - Helen Mirren goes rocker chic in a Dolce and Gabbana leopard print dress and motorcycle jacket
What do you think of this season’s take on the animal print? Loving it or not so much?
Labor Day Fashion – White hot in Hollywood
In honor of labor day weekend, a time to relax even with fashion, we’re launching the 2nd “White Hot in Hollywood” gallery. White has no doubt been the hottest color of the summer and with so many chic, light and airy looks to pick from, we’re sure you’ll be inspired when it comes to your labor day fashion.

Last but not least, Ann Hathaway in Valentino. Fans of Valentino will remember this Couture dress from the film Valentino - The Last Emperor. According to the designer, the dress came to him in a dream and was later painstakingly put together by hand, by a very talented team of seamstresses. It's good to see it out of the archives.

Trend Spotting – Tuxedo inspired looks
There are so many chic items to borrow from the boys. From boyfriend watches to boyfriend jeans, over-sized shirts to ties and suspenders, we’ve taken so many of these items and put our lady-like stamps on them. One stand out “borrowed look” of the summer has been the tuxedo-inspired look and boy do we wear it well. Below, fashion forward stars like Diane Kruger, Camilla Belle and Kirsten Dunst showcase this very hot trend.
What do you think of the tuxedo inspired looks on these fashionable ladies? Would you wear this trend?
Style Pick – Going 70s chic in wide leg pants
Wide leg pants have been elongating legs since the 70s. There’s an effortless “chic” about this style that allows women to look elegant without sacrificing any of their femininity. Part of the perks of this cut is that it makes you feel tall and lean. Stars like Elle McPherson, Jessica Alba, Penelope Cruz, January Jones and Katie Holmes who all range from super petite to super tall have all rocked this style. This shows that most women can get away with it, it’s just about finding the right material, length, width and fit.

Even pregnant women can look fabulous in this cut. Jessica Alba looked uber chic while running errands in wide leg jeans and a blazer.

Clearly the cut works for her - Here's Holmes again in wide leg jeans and an embellished Isabel Marant jacket.
This cut has also been incorporated into one of summer’s hottest trends – jumpsuits.
Keep in mind - There is such a thing as too much fabric and too much width especially if you’re petite. This cut like I mentioned earlier is meant to make you taller and leaner, not shrink you. Hilary Duff’s look below is a prime example of how not to wear wide leg pants.

Hilary Duff's wide leg trousers unfortunately have too much material and do absolutely nothing for the expectant actress. They distort her figure and instead of looking stylish, they look clownish.
Test driving this style…
As a tall girl, it’s always been a bit difficult for me to find jeans with inseams that work for me, so wide leg denim pants have been my BFFs for a long time. Here’s one of my favorite dark blue wide legs paired with a white v-neck and a double breasted blazer.
What do you think of this cut? Are you loving it?…Already wearing it or willing to try it? Check out more on my personal style and chic picks here.
TGIF – Going casual chic in a shirt-dress
There are days that even the most fashion savvy individuals don’t have the time to put things together. On these days, it’s all about something effortless, quick and chic and that’s where the shirt-dress comes in. A perfect weekend look, it’s short, comfortable and sweet. Dressing it up is as easy as adding some heels (see test driving the trend photo below) or you can keep things simple with some thong sandals. Stars like Cameron Diaz, Alessandra Ambrosio and Reese Witherspoon all love the appeal of the shirt-dress. Simply put, it’s easiness and simplicity is irresistible.
Test driving the trend – I’ve always kept a shirt-dress in my wardrobe for those casual days. I like it in a neutral color like gray because it stays the same no matter how many times you wash it. Living in Los Angeles, it also works well during the fall months. I just pair it with some funky stockings – either textured or with a fun print like polka dots. I complete my look with a scarf and some booties and I’m good to go.

Trend spotting – The peplum skirt appeal
The peplum skirt trend can be traced all the way back to the 40s and has faded in and out of fashion for quite some time now. Usually attached to a sleek silhouette, the peplum skirt is a stylish contrast to a cinched waist and it plays off the shape of the hips beautifully.
Style tip: If you have a slender figure, you can get away with a dramatically flared peplum skirt, it’ll give you the right amount of shape and curve without overwhelming your figure. If you are curvier or full-figured, you can still pull off this trend. Go with a more fitted peplum. This will allow you to show off your curves while emphasizing and accentuating a cinched waist.

Test driving the trend - I guess I can't really say the peplum skirt is a trend in my wardrobe as I've had a couple of dresses and skirts in this style for quite some time. I've had the skirt above for about 3 yrs and it's served me well both in the summer and fall months. I think of it as a classic piece that can be worn to work or dressed up for a night out. I also love to pair it with shocking and interesting colors like the emerald green above, which always makes it pop.
So what do you think of the peplum skirt…Is it something you’re willing to try?
