Trend Spotting: Forget the winter blues, shocking yellow is taking over Hollywood
Last week’s red carpet proved that Hollywood was foregoing winter and heading straight for spring. From the range of bold colors that took over the carpet, one would never guess that we were in the throes of winter. One color in particular that the stars can’t seem to get enough of is shocking yellow. This color was huge over the summer and continues to gain steam on the carpet –with no signs of slowing down. From neon shades to sequin embellished looks, color blocked pieces and elegant gowns, there’s nothing mellow about this season’s yellow. Based on what we’ve seen on the spring runways plus the already active awards season, get ready to see more of this gorgeous, stand out color.

Also at the Art of Elysium's 5th Annual Heaven Gala was Camilla Belle in a gorgeous yellow Carolina Herrera gown

Hailee Steinfeld pairs her bold and graphic in Versace dress with equally bold, neon yellow accessories
Style Tip: Yellow is a perfect way to bring a colorful element of surprise to your outfit. So how do you make it work with what you already have? You don’t have to commit to a full blown yellow dress this winter, opt instead for a boyfriend cardi in the shocking color which works well over neutral or patterned dresses. You can also try a neon version of this color in a simple and light v-neck sweater. Tuck it into a pair of high-waisted jean trousers for an effortlessly chic look. You get to mix the best of the 70s and 80s without running into a style faux-pas.
What do you think of this latest splash of color. Are you feeling it for winter or would you rather save it for spring and summer? Share your thoughts below…

Yearly style round up – 2011 in trends, hits and fashion stories

2011 in style- Michelle Williams in a 50s style dress, Rihanna color blocks, Liv Tyler combines 2 of the year's biggest trends in a polka dot dress featuring a peplum skirt while Ginnifer Goodwin takes a risk in shocking yellow
2011 was no doubt a very stylish year in fashion. It was filled with trips taken back in time for style inspiration. In just a few seasons, we visited the 50s, 60s, 70s and even the 80s, taking the best from each era. As we moved through the year, we borrowed from the boys and added a feminine twist, relaxed in colored denim, glittered and sparkled in sequins, went edgy in leather and color blocked ensembles; wild in animal print, ethereal in white, ladylike in peplum and full skirts, popped in gorgeous and shocking color; we went crazy for polka dots and floral print, stayed casual cool in stripes and so much more. Take a trip down memory lane with us as we relive this past year’s most stylish and fashionable looks and trends.
Color blocking…
This trend belonged to the risk-takers and this past season, thanks to fashion houses like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Designers like Sonia Rykiel, we were re-introduced to a really bold alternative. From Rihanna to Olivia Wilde, Jennifer Lopez and Iman, those who dared, rocked this trend to perfection.
Check out some more of our favorite color block looks over the past year…
Borrowing from the boys
From Boyfriend Jackets to tuxedo-inspired pieces, suspenders, watches and oversized shirts, we found our way to make these classic menswear pieces our own without skipping a fashionable beat.

Charlize Theron looked ultra cool in a boyfriend jacket while Ellen Pompeo opted for a sleek tuxedo jacket and Katie Holmes finished things off in a double-breasted jacket
Here are some more looks inspired by the boys this year…
White hot in Hollywood
White was most definitely the hottest color of the spring and summer seasons. This effortlessly chic color which works pretty much on everyone was out in full force. From sexy sheaths to suits, mini dresses, blouses and jeans, there was no going wrong with white this year.

The beauty in color…
With spring came an assortment of bold colors including orange and cobalt blue. Summer followed with gorgeous marigold and shocking green and fall ushered in deep red, metallics and pastels.
Print galore…
From polka dots to stripes, floral and zigzag prints, it was a year of memorable patterns in fashion.
Here’s more on the art and beauty of the polka dot and floral print…
Leather and Lace…
2011 celebrated the delicateness of lace and the refinement and edginess of leather. From red carpet events to street style, both were everywhere from spring to fall.

Kate Bosworth and Sarah Jessica Parker showed off their edgy sides, clad in uber chic Burberry leather ensembles while Jennifer Aniston opted for the sweet and sexy side of lace
Here’s more on the leather appeal…
Chic to be a lady…
One of the most exciting transformations this year was the return to lady like dressing. From peplum style skirts, full skirts, gorgeously light pastel colors to tailored coats, this year solidified that it is always chic to dress like a lady.
Ending the year with a little sparkle…
We bring 2011 to a close with the help of a little sparkle and a lot of shine. Sequin minis, dresses and accessories were must-haves for this holiday season and we honestly couldn’t think of a better way to end such a chic year.

The Fashion Insider: Holiday fashion, trends and tips with SELF Magazine’s Fashion Director
The holiday season is in full swing and between all the gorgeous bright colors, shimmer and shine, it’s sometimes a handful deciding how to work some of the current holiday trends into one’s wardrobe. Not to worry, SELF Magazine’s Fashion Director, Evyan Metzner is making things as easy and chic as possible. Evyan recently shared tips on sporting the season’s biggest trends as well as other insider info for the most curious fashionista. Check out my interview with Evyan below.
Borrowing from the boys was a recurring theme this year in fashion. From tuxedo blazers to school boy blazers, tweed jackets with elbow patches and boyfriend jackets. It was also featured in the November issue of SELF. What are some easy ways to incorporate this trend into a lady’s wardrobe without losing one’s feminine side?
Taking a traditional menswear piece like a blazer or menswear pant, try to always mix it with something soft and feminine, like a floral blouse or a silk dress, or even a brightly colored patchwork sweater. You could also add in sparkly, fun, feminine jewelry. And also choose some menswear type pieces that might have a more feminine colorway in them like red, or orange, or purple tweeds. Also, a red nail or a little pink lip feminizes anything.
You recently did a spread with Twilight’s Nikki Reed, which featured some uber chic sequin dresses. Sarah Michelle Geller is also on the December cover in a cute sequin skirt. With the holiday season, we’re definitely seeing a lot of sequin, shimmer and shine and since one can easily look inappropriate or even like a Christmas tree when it comes to this trend, what are some suggestions for sporting the sequin trend in a chic way this season?
One of the great things about wearing sequins this holiday is that they’re on fabrics that stretch, and they’re separates. So you can easily wear a sequin miniskirt like the one on Sarah Michelle Gellar and mix it with a knit, so you’re not overly blingy (even a metallic knit). You can also wear a sequin dress like the Topshop dress we featured on Nikki Reed where the sequins were only in the front, and the back looks like a little black dress. So its not overwhelming. A good rule is to keep the sequins to the same color. And choose whether you want it on top or bottom, if you’re doing separates. And also, for a more casual look, wear a little fisherman’s sweater with your sequin skirt this holiday. You can also keep your accessories to a minimum.
When you style celebrities for a shoot, in addition to keeping that celebrity’s style as well as current trends in mind, how much does your personal style or style leanings factor into creating a fashion story?
Before we even get to the shoot, there’s nothing I would show a celebrity that I would be unhappy using. So my personal taste is in the edit that I bring. But while I’m editing, I’m always thinking about the things (shapes, colors) that that person would like to wear and what would look best on them. I’m really on their side — its not about me.
In addition to being the full time Fashion Editor for SELF, you’ve also styled for major publications such as Vanity Fair, Teen Vogue and InStyle. How do you stay inspired and keep things fresh after 20 years in the industry?
I love going to the movies and reading books and going to photography exhibitions. And the thing about fashion is that its always changing. And even though its a skirt and a blouse and shirt, its how you put it together. And who you put it together with/on and where you put it together is always changing. You have to keep finding your inspiration in different things. Also, all the changes in digital photography and videos and iPads and blogging has made it more work, but more interesting. And I love the amount of information that’s available at your fingertips that used to be impossible to get.
With reality television and ‘behind the scenes’ access to so many things including fashion these days, the everyday fashion-curious gal/guy has been able to sneak a peek behind the curtain of the fashion world. For many however, that world still seems inaccessible in so many ways. Knowing what you know now versus when you first started out, what would you say to someone looking to break into this industry?
Looking at fashion shows is a very small part of what I do on my job. Its being able to look at all of those trends and figure out how you can present it over a certain amount of pages with a clear message of what you’re trying to say, who you’re going to be shooting it with and where you’re going to be shooting it, and how you’re handling all those personalities and putting together all these pieces of the puzzle together — that is what you don’t see in a behind-the-scenes video. That’s only the shoot day.
Interning is the key to really getting your foot in the door to see how all the different departments work within a magazine. And finding out what you like best — whether you want to style, or be a market editor, or be a photo director, etc. Its a team. Its definitely a team. I’d also suggest simply looking at magazines — what do you react to? What makes you smile? What makes you go “that’s so cool?” What photographers do you like? What fashion do you like and why? What designers? Its important to be able to say why you like things and not just say “because.”
Of course it wouldn’t be fashion if we weren’t looking forward. What trends are you most excited about for spring?
I am so looking forward to the sugary confectionary Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, “power of pretty” look this spring. I can hardly wait.

Trend spotting – This holiday season, it’s all about sequins, shimmer and shine (Work this trend into your wardrobe)
The holiday season always brings a hint of shimmer and sparkle and this year is no different. From sequin minis to metallic gowns, the red carpet is already seeing it’s fair share of this holiday trend. Stars like Jessica Alba, Taylor Swift, Sofia Vergara and Kate Hudson have all stepped out rocking their favorite shinning looks and if there is one trend that’s incredibly easy to incorporate into your current wardrobe, it’s this. Keep in mind that sequin dresses make the best party looks and with holiday and new year parties rolling around, you can find a piece that not only works for you but will no doubt make you stand out. Check out some of this year’s standout sparkling red carpet looks below and hopefully, they’ll inspire you.

Trend spotting – All hail the Greek goddess

Emma Stone attends the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in a green Grecian goddess gown with gold accessories by Lanvin
Before the “goddess” title became synonymous with Charlie Sheen’s summer antics, it actually was associated with beauty, grace and elegance. In terms of fashion, there’s a reason why the goddess style dress has endured for so many seasons. Evoking the very essence of a woman’s beauty and femininity, it doesn’t overwhelm but in fact enhances. Draped to perfection on the wearer, its simple but elegant cut is what makes it stand out. As awards season approaches, this trend will no doubt be prominent on the red carpet and stars like Jessica Biel, Freida Pinto, Emma Stone and many others have already gotten a head start on the trend. What do you think of the goddess style dress. Are you a fan? Share your thoughts below…

Jessica Biel wears Giambattista Valli's modern take on the goddess dress featuring a keyhole bust and oversized layered puff sleeves. The look is completed with a traditional gilded leaf belt.

Master the trends for Fall – A breakdown of Fall 2011′s must-have looks + tips to make them your own
As Fashion Week gets underway in NYC and the gorgeous and colorful Spring 2011 looks saunter down the runways, it’s easy to forget that fall is here and now and spring is more than a few months away. Not to worry though, based on the looks featured on the earlier fall runways, the upcoming months need not be dreary nor do you need to give up even an ounce of color. With the runways featuring rich colors like cobalt blue, marigold, burnt orange and shocking red; texture that ranged from lace to leather and prints galore, the upcoming season is gearing up to be anything but boring when it comes to fashion.
Here’s a peek at trends to look forward to this coming fall season…
Color: The runways were rich with color for fall, two colors in particular made their mark – Cobalt Blue and Emerald Green. Everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Ralph Lauren and 3.1 Phillip Lim showed their love for these colors. Other interesting colors to look out for fall are Marigold and burnt Orange. Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Victoria Beckham all featured these gorgeous colors.
Style Tip: Color is the best and easiest way to stand out with your fall wardrobe. Go for structured jackets in shocking colors to incorporate this runway trend into your wardrobe. Try a cobalt blue swing jacket or an emerald green trench coat. You’ll keep warm and stay stylish, all with a pop of color.
Lace: Looks like lace is here to stay. Both Carolina Herrera and Monique Lhuillier showed very feminine and elegant looks incorporating lace and lace print. Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu also featured this trend.
Style Tip: The key to keeping the elegance of this trend is to find something that doesn’t show too much skin or combines the use of other materials like black silk or leather.
Leather: The leather movement is going strong and from what we saw during New York Fashion Week, it has no intention of slowing down. From 3.1 Phillip Lim to Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, leather made a huge splash. It came in pants, shift dresses, pastel colors, rich dark colors and it was fabulous.
Style Tip: This is such an easy trend to incorporate into your wardrobe. You can pair some leather leggings with an oversized sweater and pumps, go for a rocker chic look with a motorcycle jacket which can be worn with skinny jeans, leggings or a dress to add a feminine touch.
Print: If color played a starring role in the collections, print played a co-starring role. Oscar de la Renta’s runway was rich with exotic prints which is an extension of what we saw in the spring and summer months. Marc Jacobs made us fall in love with polka dots, big and small, Proenza Schouler incorporated his mélange of prints into everything from structured jackets to pants, skirts and shift dresses and Monique Lhuillier made animal print incredibly elegant.
Style Tip: Always balance out your prints with an item in a solid color. Pair a tribal print shift dress with a structured black blazer or print pants with a simple pastel colored silk top.
The “new” Pants: The runways featured sleek, elegant trousers for fall so just because summer is over doesn’t mean you should pack up those 70s inspired pants. Sticking to the theme of elegant simplicity, the “it” pants of the season are definitely the ankle pants. Everyone from Calvin Klein to 3.1 Phillip Lim and Jason Wu showed us the perfect city chic look with these pants.
Style Tip: These pants are equally chic with a pair of oxfords or sky high pumps.
Fall Trend Alert – Going wild for animal print
After seeing a refreshing take on animal print on the Fall 2011 runways earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before it started making it’s way to the red carpet and Hollywood events.
Not everyone’s a fan of animal print and that’s understandable. There is after all a very thin line between stylish and tacky when it comes to this print.
Style Tip: Test out this trend with some elegant leopard print peep-toe pumps.
Here are some chic animal print looks to give you some inspiration for fall.

Jessica Alba didn't let pregnancy stop her from being fashionable. She took a risk that paid off in a leopard print Dolce and Gabbana Maxi

The print doesn't discriminate - Helen Mirren goes rocker chic in a Dolce and Gabbana leopard print dress and motorcycle jacket
What do you think of this season’s take on the animal print? Loving it or not so much?
Labor Day Fashion – White hot in Hollywood
In honor of labor day weekend, a time to relax even with fashion, we’re launching the 2nd “White Hot in Hollywood” gallery. White has no doubt been the hottest color of the summer and with so many chic, light and airy looks to pick from, we’re sure you’ll be inspired when it comes to your labor day fashion.

Last but not least, Ann Hathaway in Valentino. Fans of Valentino will remember this Couture dress from the film Valentino - The Last Emperor. According to the designer, the dress came to him in a dream and was later painstakingly put together by hand, by a very talented team of seamstresses. It's good to see it out of the archives.

Trend Spotting – Tuxedo inspired looks
There are so many chic items to borrow from the boys. From boyfriend watches to boyfriend jeans, over-sized shirts to ties and suspenders, we’ve taken so many of these items and put our lady-like stamps on them. One stand out “borrowed look” of the summer has been the tuxedo-inspired look and boy do we wear it well. Below, fashion forward stars like Diane Kruger, Camilla Belle and Kirsten Dunst showcase this very hot trend.
What do you think of the tuxedo inspired looks on these fashionable ladies? Would you wear this trend?
