Trend spotting – The peplum skirt appeal
The peplum skirt trend can be traced all the way back to the 40s and has faded in and out of fashion for quite some time now. Usually attached to a sleek silhouette, the peplum skirt is a stylish contrast to a cinched waist and it plays off the shape of the hips beautifully.
Style tip: If you have a slender figure, you can get away with a dramatically flared peplum skirt, it’ll give you the right amount of shape and curve without overwhelming your figure. If you are curvier or full-figured, you can still pull off this trend. Go with a more fitted peplum. This will allow you to show off your curves while emphasizing and accentuating a cinched waist.

Test driving the trend - I guess I can't really say the peplum skirt is a trend in my wardrobe as I've had a couple of dresses and skirts in this style for quite some time. I've had the skirt above for about 3 yrs and it's served me well both in the summer and fall months. I think of it as a classic piece that can be worn to work or dressed up for a night out. I also love to pair it with shocking and interesting colors like the emerald green above, which always makes it pop.
So what do you think of the peplum skirt…Is it something you’re willing to try?

Trend spotting – Summer gets a splash of yellow
Many would say yellow during the summer is a no brainer. The color itself is associated with so many positive things that the warm weather brings… the sun, lightness, fun, happiness and not to forget, the smiley face. So it comes as no surprise that this color has been a major staple this season. It’s a very easy and uncomplicated color to wear and almost everyone can get away with wearing the right shade. Below are some favorite summer yellow looks that make us feel all bright and shiny…
Style Tip: Avoid looking like Big Bird by keeping things simple when it comes to this color. You can definitely take a risk and play with certain styles and get away with it but for most, we’d say – no frills, definitely no feathers and no complicated twists. Just a simple structured or streamlined look….well unless you’re Rihanna (see below).
Worthy throwback…
What do you think of all this yellow? Are you into it or would you rather pass on it?
Trend spotting – Gorgeous orange for summer and pre-fall + style tips to make it your own
After spotting colors like burnt orange and marigold on the catwalks for fall 2011, we knew it was only a matter of time before these gorgeous colors made an early leap into summer and pre-fall wardrobes. Orange is a color that lets you get away with being shocking whatever season it may be. It’s bold, fearless and adventurous and it most definitely makes a statement. Below, check out some daring variations of “orange” looks on celebrities taking a fashion leap…

Looks like the former Destiny's Child band mates are still inspiring each other. UK X Factor Judge, Kelly Rowland also stepped out in orange.
I’m a huge fan of the color as well. As bold as it is, it’s also pretty practical if you play your cards right. One of my favorite dresses is a 50s style orange dress with a pleated skirt. I’ve worn the dress alone, with a sweater and even put a twist on it by wearing it as a skirt.

Test driving the orange trend - (To the left, I created a make-shift skirt by pairing the bright orange dress with a forest green v-neck sweater and cinching my waist with a cognac belt. My look is finished off with striped peep-toe pumps. To the right, I paired the dress with a simple black sweater, a skinny black belt and added a little edge with some gladiator sandals).
Style Tip: Green, brown and black are great colors to mix with this shade.
So what do you think of these looks? Too bright or just right?
Trend spotting – Links and chains add a little edge to your wardrobe
We’re already seeing a lot of leather looks for the upcoming fall season. It seems it’s all about adding a little edge with a feminine twist. Karl Lagerfeld also recently hinted at an infusion of “rocker chic” details for his upcoming exclusive capsule collection for Macy’s and we can tell that it’s only the beginning for this trend. From satchels and totes to clutches adorned with links and chains, here are 5 drool worthy looks under $50. To shop each item, click on the photo.

Trend spotting – The “mini” revival (How short can you go?)
Summer is always a time to show off some skin especially those gorgeous gams that you’ve spent months laboring for at the gym unless you’re genetically blessed, in which case, trotting around in a pair of stilletos is all you need.
Speaking of stilletos in relation to the topic du jour, the higher those Louboutins and Choos seem to get, the shorter the hemlines seem to recede. Although many argue that the miniskirt may have existed as long as civilization has (recently unearthed ancient figurines dating between 5400-4700 B.C show women in mini skirts) ; Thanks to the 60s, a politically charged era of liberation, revolution and change, the mini resurfaced again at the fore front of the fashion movement.
The skirt has seen so many variations of length from the lady like, full skirt of the 50s to the mid length cut of the 70s and the super short hemlines of the 80s and 90s respectively.
In today’s culture, it’s emphasized that sex sells and shock value keeps people wanting more. So the question is how short can you go? Check out some short looks from your favorite celebs below and tell us what you think…too short or just enough + is there an age limit for certain lengths?

Age is clearly nothing but a number as the 41 years old star went short and white in a coat dress in Paris

Another Jennifer who likes showing off her legs in minis is Jennifer Aniston, here in a shimmering black dress

Trend spotting – The art and style of the polka dot
Polka dots continue to take over this summer and they’ll most certainly be sticking around for fall as well, thanks to heavy hitters like Marc Jacobs who featured them on the fall runways in an assortment of sizes. We’ve already covered the polka dot tights trend to keep you inspired for the upcoming fall season. Now we’re graduating to clothing. The re-emergence of polka dots this season has produced some chic and out of the box pieces from designers like Stella McCartney, while maintaining the classic whimsy that the print is known for, thanks to others like Oscar de la Renta. From the runways to magazine spreads and the red carpet, scroll down below to experience the art and style of the polka dot.

Blake Lively was not the only starlet gracing magazine covers in this coveted print, Emma Stone also covered Elle Magazine covered in polka dots

Trend Spotting – All that glitters…

Jennifer Lopez makes a bold move in a sequined Zuhair Murad jumpsuit while Blake Lively goes for drama in a sequined Chanel jacket and super short wrap skirt
I recently got tapped to guest blog for Sense of Fashion on all things stylish. This week, I am covering all things that glitter.
The revival of the 70s and 80s continues this summer with all things that glitter and sparkle. From sequined tops to metallic skirts and glittering minis, it’s the perfect time to let your inner disco Queen shine. Because this is such an over the top look, it’s important to note that there’s a very thin line between the “feisty diva” look and just plain ridiculous. Click here for the full article which features incredibly chic looks and a few style tips to keep you on the right side of that line.
Stylist’s Corner: Steal this look (Watercolor print dresses)
Summer is the time to experiment with a melange of beautiful colors and this summer all the gorgeous colors we love are coming together to form an irresistible watercolor print. The boldness of this print takes inspiration from the 70s era which dominated the catwalks for spring and summer.
The watercolor print is easy to dress up or down. You can take it to the beach, lunch or dinner. It’s bold yet practical and works with a variety of skin tones. It will also carry effortlessly into fall which means you’ll be getting a lot of use from it. Check out the Stars already in love with this print.
Below is a picture of me wearing one of my favorite watercolor print dresses pre-spring. For summer, I pair it with bold-hued strappy sandals (both high-heeled and flat) or dark cognac colored wedges. You can also throw on a boyfriend blazer to tone the colors down. This addition works whether you’re dressing up or going casual. What are your thoughts on the watercolor print? Would you wear it?
