Talented, yes. Cultured, yes. Outspoken, absolutely. We all know Karl Lagerfeld is a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world. As the genius behind the rejuvenation of the house of Chanel, Lagerfeld has single handedly brought the iconic brand into the modern world without losing any of it’s classic charm. Although most agree that he’s incredibly talented, he has also found many ways to ruffle quite a few feathers with his words. The trilingual (German, French and Italian) designer has quite a way with words that only he can get away with. From fellow designers to ex-muses, supermodels, royals and his mother, no one and no fad is safe from the brutally honest opinions of Monsieur Lagerfeld. We’ve compiled some of the 77 year old’s most outrageous quotes for your Friday viewing pleasure.
On his mother…
“I love hats, in a way, but when I was a child, I’d wear Tyrolean hats, and my mother – I was something like eight – said to me, ‘You shouldn’t wear hats. You look like an old dyke…’ Do you say such things to children? She was quite funny, no?”
On not having children…
“It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter.”
On the Middleton sisters…
“Kate Middleton has a nice silhouette and she is the right girl for that boy, I like that kind of woman, I like romantic beauties. On the other hand, her sister struggles. I don’t like the sister’s face. She should only show her back.”
On style at the royal wedding…
“This was not a collection, this was the choices of this kind of woman for this kind of ceremony: the bad proportions, the ugly hats, the short skirts on fat legs”
“If I was a woman in Russia I would be a lesbian, as the men are very ugly. There are a few handsome ones, like Naomi Campbell’s boyfriend, but there you see the most beautiful women and the most horrible men.”
On fellow German and supermodel Heidi Klum…
“I don’t know Heidi Klum, she was never known in France. Claudia Schiffer also doesn’t know who she is.”
On Ines de la Fressange, his former muse…
“I wish her all the luck in the world, just so long as I don’t have to see her anymore or hear her spoken about.”
On designer, Yves Saint Laurent in 1984…
‘He is very middle-of-the-road French-very pied-noir, very provincial.”
On Lana del Rey…
“Is she a construct with all her implants?”
On women who complain about seeing thin models in fashion magazines…
“They are fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television, saying that thin models are ugly.”
On the Queen of England…
“She looks a little bit like her grandmother– a more smiley version. In terms of what she wears, she’s come into herself a little bit more– whatever that is.”
On being working-class…
“I’m a working-class person, working with class.”
“I don’t do meetings.”
On office work…
“There’s something boring about people who have to go to an office for a living.”
On losing all that weight…
“Some people would like me to be round again.”
On working so much…
“Why should I stop working? If I do, I’ll die and it’ll all be finished.”
“I think tattoos are horrible. It’s like living in a Pucci dress full-time.”
Finally, on not taking his words so seriously…
“Everything I say is a joke. I am a joke myself.”
How do you know that spring is officially here? By the plethora of “white looks” that slowly take over the red carpet. This past week, white was the color du jour. Model Karlie Kloss showed off some serious skin in an all white look while attending the MTV Movie Awards. Gwyneth Paltrow also opted for white at the premiere of Iron Man 3. Keeping with the theme of light colors, this week was also filled with gorgeous shades of yellow. Olivia Wilde lightened up in an “almost floating” yellow Monique Lhuillier frock while fashion plate Olivia Palermo didn’t disappoint in a bright yellow Katie Ermilio number paired with some super fun Jimmy Choo heels. Here’s a breakdown of the past week in color.
With spring in full swing, we’re bringing back our weekly round-up of colorful street style and red carpet looks. This week, pastel colored hues ushered in the new season with stars like Emmy Rossum, Olga Kurylenko and Marion Cotillard stepping out in lilac and lighter shades of blue. Lighter tones continued to make a strong showing in print as well. Both Blake Lively and Solange Knowles made fashion forward statements in their printed, spring inspired looks. Rounding out the week in shades of peach and orange were Karolina Kurkova, Eva Mendes, Olivia Palermo and Freida Pinto who proved that you can’t go wrong in bold hues. Check out our favorite colorful looks from the past week.

They say behind every great man, there’s a great woman; well behind every Hollywood star, there’s an uber stylish stylist. The Hollywood Reporter has once again released its annual Stylists issue. For the third year in a row, the issue showcases the artists behind your favorite stars and their red carpet looks. As every celebrity knows, the red carpet these days can either make or break you. Have a fashion “moment” as Kerry Washington and her stylist Erin Walsh call it, and you’ll find your face planted on every best dressed list. Have a miss, and well, you know the rest.
THR’s stylists issue features four separate covers of stars and their stylists, including Jennifer Lopez and Rob Zangardi & Mariel Haenn, Zoe Saldana and Petra Flannery, Taylor Swift and Joseph Cassell and Julianne Moore and Leslie Fremar.
Ranking in the top ten this year are Leslie Fremar (clients include Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson), Petra Flannery (clients include Zoe Saldana, Claire Danes, Megan Fox and Emma Stone) and Erin Walsh (clients include Zoe Saldana and Kristin Wiig). For the full list, photos, style inspiration and behind the scenes videos, head over to The Hollywood Reporter.
In honor of the artists that make them look so effortlessly chic, stars like Zoe Saldana, Kaley Cuoco, Nina Dobrev and Naomi Watts stepped out for a luncheon hosted by THR and Jimmy Choo.
With daylight savings in full effect and Monday ushering in a new moon, we’re definitely in a mood for change. Spring has always been a great time to shed the old and embrace the new, especially in fashion. This week, we’re letting go of the grays and blacks and letting gorgeous color take over. Long hair that kept us warm during the winter months can now also be swept aside, making way for a chic new look. Speaking of new looks, we’ve picked out 3 great inspirations for a chic spring cut. From Marion Cotillard’s angled cut with side bangs to Olivia Palermo’s do-no-wrong shoulder length waves and finally, the always style sassy Ginnifer Goodwin’s pixie, there’s a little something for everyone.

Tangerine is out and Emerald Green is in. It’s official, Pantone has announced the regal color that is Emerald Green as the official color of 2013. This shocking, rich hue is right in line with the gorgeous colors shown on this past year’s runways. Interestingly enough, this particular shade of green has been burning up the red carpets as well as the runways for quite some time now, so it makes sense that it’s coming to the forefront of fashion in the upcoming year. It’s a color that transcends trends and seasons. It can go from a structured sheath to a ball gown and back to skinny jeans. In honor of this stunning color, we’ve combed our Rue de Chic Blog archives for some of our favorite Emerald Green looks. So, are you excited to get green? Tell us what you think about Pantone’s pick for color of the year below.
When it comes to dressing up in the fall and winter months, I always say that the shoes make the look. The ability of a chic pair of booties to transform a simple, printed dress or a pair of knee high boots to elevate a cozy sweater and skinnies never ceases to amaze me. Which is why I’m oh so excited to announce a fantastic collaboration with Naya shoes. As part of their Blogger challenge, I was asked to create a look centering around one of fall’s hottest trends in footwear – BUCKLES! Never one to pass up a styling challenge, I put together a 70s glam inspired look with a modern twist. I paired my buckled “Virtue” booties with a retro-printed dress, faux-fur shag, some chunky gold accessories / accents and a light green faux-croc clutch. The “Virtue” was such a fun piece to style and I loved that they reminded me a little of cowboy boots. The leather was slightly distressed and ultra soft. Paired with the “high-enough” chunky heel — and I was completely sold.
As part of the challenge, Naya is showcasing all the blogger looks on their facebook page. Please vote for my look here and you’ll be automatically entered to win a pair of Naya’s of your own. Voting ends on Monday, December 17th.

Kristen Stewart kicked off her Twilight promotional duties by showing off some serious leg in Louis Vuitton. As she continues to ramp up appearances, her style is also heating up. Doing a little double duty, she stepped out to promote her other film –On The Road at AFI Fest. The actress was sleek and edgy in a black and white Balenciaga ensemble paired with Christian Louboutin pumps. She finished off her look with a mini pompadour, wine lips and accessorized with a simple gold chain. As the face of Balenciaga, she has had a very fruitful and stylish relationship with the brand as well as now former Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière –merging her tomboyish preferences with the house’s edgy aesthetic. What do you think of Kristen’s look? Was it a hit of miss? Share your thoughts below.
